Why SDS and Non-SDS Matter: The Key Differences Explained

Student Direct Stream (SDS) is a newly launched program designed to bring efficiency and effectiveness to the process of students receiving their student visas through the Canada Study Permit Application. There are certain rules and requirements that need to be fulfilled for students to qualify under this program and can study in Canada.

The visa requirements are as follows:

  1. The students are required to obtain a minimum of 6 bands in each module/language skill in the IELTS test.
  2. The students are required to deposit the entire tuition fee of the first year at the Canadian institution instead of only the semester fee. The institution, either college or university, should possess a valid Designated Learning Institution (DLI) number.
  3. The student should obtain a GIC of $10,200.

Documents required for the SDS visa application:

All of these students who want to study abroad must include the following documents in their SDS application.

  1. Letter of Acceptance from DLI institution.
  2. Medical exam confirmation document copy.
  3. Have a Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC) of $10,200 proof.
  4. Proof of paid tuition fee receipt (entire first year).
  5. IELTS score sheet with minimum 6.0 bands in each language skill. (LRSW).

The Student Direct Stream program (SDS)  has been devised with the support of Scotia Bank, in order to make the process of studying in Canada easier. Note: Overall band of 6.0 with no less than 6.0 in each sections for undergraduate programs and an overall band of 6.5 with no less than 6.0 in each sections for postgraduate programs is usually an admission requirement. This varies for all programs and institutions.

Non-SDS:

The applicants that do not qualify for any of the above-mentioned provisions are considered under the Non-SDS visa applications. They are required to apply for a visa under the General category of Study Permit.

The documents required for the visa are as follows:

  1.  Letter of Acceptance from College or University
  2.  IELTS score sheet with no minimum score requirement (Chances for Visa depend on the scores achieved. A score of less of than 5.5 band in any language skill has low chances)
  3. 12th Grade mark sheet for undergraduate programs
  4. Usually, a bachelor’s degree or an advanced diploma lasting three to four years with a minimum of 50% or above is required for postgraduate courses. (This may vary with different programs or institutions)
  5. Proof of work experience, along with payslips of the last 3 months, if there is any.
  6.  Proof of payment of tuition fee
  7. Proof of funds to support living expenses – bank savings, investments, education loan, and so on.
  8. Proof of income – Form 16 or income tax return documents of either the student or sponsor
  9. Medical test results conducted only by approved panel doctors
  10. Visa fee of $150
